River Cane Bamboo. Only bamboo native to the U.S. It creates dense thickets and is highly invasive. Sun. Average, well-drained soil.


BAMBUSA 
  Large genus of tropical and subtropical clumping bamboos. Usually tall, they have numerous branches at each node with one or two much larger than the rest. Shooting occurs in late summer or fall. Can be grown indoors with sufficient light and humidity.

BASHANIA FARGESII

A running, mountain bamboo from China. Foot-long leaves on straight stems make it an excellent hedge or specimen. May be hardier than indicated. May be worth trying in Zone 6. Sun. Average, well-drained soil.                Zone:7 


BORINDA 
  A recently described genus of mountain bamboo found in Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. Usually have fine longitudinal ridges on either the culm internodes or the branch internodes, or both. Forms tight clumps.

(Fargesia angustissima) Beautiful mountain bamboo from Sichuan, China. New shoots are purple-green heavily covered with white powder. Narrow leaves, 3/4" long, are held on upright dark stems Clumping habit. Food for the giant panda. Also used for weaving. Grows under evergreens. Part-shade. Average, well-drained soil.    Zone:8

(Himalayacalamus intermedius) One of the famous mountain bamboos of the Himalayas. Forms a beautiful tight clump with arching, fountain-like culms under a head of tiny, delicate leaves. Quickly reaches a large size. Culms are pale blue in cold climates. Survived the long, brutally cold West Cost winter of 2008/9 without any damage. Sun to part-shade. CHIMONOBAMBUSA 
  Medium size, running bamboo. Typically shoots in fall and winter - earlier in cooler areas. Will often reshoot in spring and summer if original shoots are damaged, but these will lack normal vigor. Attractive in containers.

(Square-Stem Bamboo) Tall, upright, statuesque bamboo. Four-sided stems with large nodes. Deep green, 3" long leaves. May be hardier than Zone 8, but not by a lot. Ours here on the West Coast have survived -12 C. Could be a great indoor or conservatory plant. Sun to part-shade. Average, well-drained soil.     Zone:8 


CHUSQUEA GIGANTEA

(C. breviglumis) This is one beautiful bamboo. An open clumping. light and dark green culms with multiple branches clothed in small dark green leaves. New shoots are red. Sun. Average, well-drained soil.     Zone:7  See Photo

FARGESIA  Some varieties are the most cold hardy of all bamboo. Clumpers, they are usually in the small to mid-size range. Their slender, arching culms bear numerous branches and delicate leaves giving a bush-like appearance. Most dislike strong sun and intense summer heat.

One of the tallest of the Fargesias, with the largest culms - 1 1/4" diameter. Leaves are like nitida but slightly larger. Not as hardy as nitida or murielae. Sun to part-shade. Average, well-drained soil.    Zone:7

(Umbrella Bamboo) Hardiest of the clumping bamboos. Graceful, arching canes change to yellow after emerging green. Good specimen plant with it's airy mass of delicate, pea-green leaves. One of the prime foods of the giant pandas, growing at elevations of up to 10,000 feet in China. Part-shade to shade. Moist, well-drained.     Zone:5

(Fountain Bamboo) As hardy as F. murieliae though not as robust. Quite delicate looking. A bluish-white powder covers the dark purple culms when young. Part-shade to shade. Moist, well-drained soil.   Zone:5

INDOCALAMUS TESSELLATUS

Hardiest of the Indocalamus (-21 C). Seldom reaches it's maximum height. However, it's huge leaves (24"x4") make it quite extraordinary. Does well in containers. A runner. Shade to part-shade. Average, well-drained soil.  2 m (7').  Zone:7 



PHYLLOSTACHYS 
  Large genus of medium to giant size, rampant runners. Have a distinct groove which runs the length of the internode of the branching side. Shooting occurs in early to late spring, though some varieties shoot sporadically throughout the growing season. The main source of edible shoots and timber in China and Japan.

(Yellow Groove Bamboo) One of the hardiest of the larger Phyllostachys, known to survive -26 C. Young stems are green with a yellow groove. Occasionally zigzag. Plant with care, it can be invasive. Sun. Moist, well-drained soil.  7 m (22').  Zone:5

(Sweetshoot Bamboo) Arching stems. It gains it's name from the delicious, sweet, acid-free taste of the culms. The best of the edible bamboos. Sun. Average, well-drained soil.  10 m (30').  Zone:7

(Moso) aka P. heterocycla pubescens. Largest of the hardy bamboos. Used as food, timber or paper. Young culms have velvety hairs. This plant needs lots of heat and will only grow from large divisions.  Sun. Average, well-drained soil.  18 m (60').  Zone:7

One of the smallest of the genus. Used for bonsai in Japan. Light olive green culms with almost horizontal branches. Culms turn darker with age.  Sun. Average, well-drained soil.  5 m (15').  Zone:7

Another heat-loving bamboo. Well behaved for a spreader. Known as Beautiful Bamboo in China, it is heat, drought and cold tolerant. Sun. Average, well-drained soil.  7 m (22').  Zone:6

PLEIOBLASTUS 
  Small and medium size, running bamboos with numerous branch buds. The leaves occur near the tips of the culms and branches. Great groundcovers, they are also excellent in containers.

A variegated dwarf bamboo with varying degrees of creamy-yellow striping in the leaves. Fairly sun tolerant. Mow in early spring to refresh the foliage. Shade to part-shade. Average, well-drained soil.  1 m (3').  Zone:8

PSEUDOSASA 
  Medium-size to tall shrub-like running bamboos with usually only one branch at each node; never more than three. The leaves are usually broad, green and grow thickly. Straw-coloured culm sheaths are very-late shedding.

SASAELLA MASAMUNEANA ALBOSTRIATA

SEMIARUNDINARIA 
  Medium-size, temperate, running bamboos. Culms are mostly round, with a partial flattening of the internode near the nodes. Culm leaves cling to the middle of their base before dropping. The leaves are generally broader and deeper green than Phyllostachys.

SHIBATAEA 
  A running genus similar to Phyllostachys but with more branches at each node - usually 3 to 5, but no secondary branches. The branches are unusually short with slightly flattened internodes on the branching side.

THAMNOCALAMUS 
Clumping bamboos from the mountain regions of eastern Asia and Africa. They usually have small, thin leaves with gently arching culms.
